Method
Microsuction is the method we use to remove excessive earwax. This is a safer method than water syringing as it is less prone to infections or trauma as well as causing minimal discomfort. Using a microscope, we can get a clear view of the wax in the ear canal, which is then safely removed with a low-power suction machine.
Before Your Appointment
Before your appointment, we recommend using drops, such as olive oil, in your ears twice daily for 2-3 days (your doctor or pharmacist may recommend other eardrops, which can also be used). This will soften the earwax and make extraction a lot more comfortable. When using drops in your ears to soften the wax, you may initially feel your ears feel even more blocked. However, this is just the earwax absorbing the drops and swelling up.
Appointment
Your appointment will consist of the following steps:
1. Ask you about your medical history to understand if the procedure is safe to carry out
2. Explain the procedure to you and answer any questions you may have
3. Examine the ear canal using a video otoscope, which both you and the Audiologist can view
4. Safely remove the earwax using a microsuction machine and manual earwax removal tools
5. Re-examine the ear canal using a video otoscope to ensure the earwax has been removed
An earwax removal appointment can take up to 30 minutes.
Note: Occasionally, we cannot successfully remove all of the earwax during the first appointment due to its hardness or position relative to the ear drum. If this happens, we will ask you to continue to use olive oil or sodium bicarbonate drops in your ears and make a further appointment. The second appointment will be charged at a reduced fee of £10.
